Department of Biotechnology

Overview

The 21st century is envisioned as an era of Biotechnology. The challenges of the century among other things would require advance and applied research activities to promote and contribute to the scientific, technological and economic development of the country. Biotechnology is an interdisciplinary science, which is overlapping botany, zoology, microbiology, bioinformatics, biochemistry, pharmacy, molecular biology, genetics, agriculture, forensic and medical sciences. Biotechnology not only contributed by developing biological processes complementary to chemical technologies but also provided economical, efficient, clean, pollution free biological technologies. The production of sophisticated bio-chemicals including drugs diagnostics and bacterial leaching of metals from ores by these biotechnological industries has not only replaced the inefficient, resources consuming, often pollution producing chemical technologies but also have exerted an environmental impact by slowing down the depletion of valuable non- renewable resources. It is fundamental and applied science that provides foundation on which the understanding of the natural and material world depends

Vision

Biotechnology can be viewed as a group of useful, enabling technologies with wide and diverse applications. It has large, highly profitable, modern industrial outlets of great value to society e.g., DNA recombinant technology, most revolutionary branch of the modern science and have a profound impact on medicine, contributing to the diagnostics and cure of hereditary defects and serious disease and the development of new biopharmaceutical drugs and vaccines for human and animal use. It also deals with the modification of microorganisms, plants and farm animals for improved and tailored food production and to increased opportunities for environmental remediation and protection. New technologies dealing with plant and animal breeding are much faster and have lower costs. Genetically modified crops are growing exponentially. The field is further exemplified with the industrial production of enzymes like proteases, amylases, celluloses and lipases, industrial manufacturing plants for milk and milk products, alcohols, organic acids, antibiotics, vitamins, growth promoting factors and monoclonal antibodies

Mission

The mission of the Department is to enhance knowledge of students in the new spheres of Biotechnology and to acquire new skills and techniques in the field of life sciences by providing them excellent learning environment, quality education, and mentoring
